Twitter's safety infrastructure was dismantled overnight. In November 2022, Elon Musk's mass layoffs eliminated the entire ML Ethics, Transparency, and Accountability (META) team of roughly twenty people. Director Rumman Chowdhury, who had been building algorithmic fairness tools, called the dissolution 'a loss for the industry.' Senior Engineering Manager Joan Deitchman noted that 'the team that was researching and pushing for algorithmic transparency and algorithmic choice... is gone.' The departures eliminated Twitter's capacity for internal safety oversight in a single day.
